Spotlight: Eastview Mayor’s Chair 1940-1970

chaine du maire

Chair used by the mayor of Eastview at the city council table from approximately 1940 to 1970.

It is by happy coincidence that this chair, a witness to Vanier’s political history, found its way into our collection.

For a long time, City Hall, the police station, and the fire department shared the same premises at the corner of Montreal Road and Cyr Street.

In the late 1960s, the municipal council decided to replace the old furniture. It quickly ended up in the trash.

André Roy, a firefighter with the Eastview Fire Department, was returning home to St-Denis Street at the end of his shift when he saw the old furniture behind the building and decided to take the mayor’s chair home with him.

The chair remained in Mr. Roy’s possession for some 50 years until his daughter, Dominique, donated it to the museum. Mr. Roy passed away in 2021 at the venerable age of 90.

Thank you to Laurette and André Roy for preserving this piece of Vanier’s political history.
