On May 27, history and contemporary creation will collide in a most original setting. For the second edition of their Théâtre de Poche (Pocket Theatre) series, Créations In Vivo invites the public to step inside the Vanier Sugar Shack on Pères-Blancs Avenue.
The goal? To take part in a key developmental milestone for Patenteuses, a brand-new Franco-Ontarian musical that promises to shake up our heritage.
An Immersion in the Creative “Workshop”
Rather than waiting for the official curtain call, Créations In Vivo is choosing transparency by opening its rehearsal space to the public. Spectators will have the privilege of attending a full script reading, followed by an open discussion with the artists. This is a rare opportunity to see a work-in-progress, understand its inner workings, and exchange ideas with the team before the show takes its final form.
Secret Societies and Franco-Ontarian “Glitter”
Inspired by true events, the plot transports us to Saint-Cibole in “nineteen-hundred-and-loose.” We follow Marielle, Lucile, Dorothée, and Rita who, fed up with their husbands’ mysterious absences, discover the existence of La Patente (The Order of Jacques-Cartier).
Founded in Vanier in 1926, this secret, male-only organization worked in the shadows for decades to protect French-Canadian interests. But in this musical, the women have no intention of staying on the sidelines:
-
They infiltrate the order disguised as priests.
-
They discover a heritage in danger.
-
They decide to save that legacy—out loud and through song!
Described as a “musical of the joyful revolution,” the show navigates between biting satire and glittery energy, brought to life by a renowned creative team: Chloé Thériault (script and lyrics), Brian St-Pierre (music), and Dillon Orr (direction). Cast: Darquise Lauzon, Ariane Lemay, Emma-Rose Smith, and Chloé Thériault.
A Centenary Revisited
The official launch of Patenteuses is slated for October 2026 at the MIFO (Orléans), coinciding almost to the day with the 100th anniversary of the founding of La Patente in Vanier. This project asks a fundamental question: what remains of this heritage today, and how does a new generation of Francophones want to reclaim it?
