The Maple Sugar Shack
The first sugar shack was built in the 1950s by the White Fathers of Africa. This burnt down and was rebuilt in 1998 by a community organization called Action Vanier. Trees of this forest, felled in the ice storm of '98, were used to construct the ceiling of this quaint building.
The sap from the maples surrounding the Sugar Shack is collected the 'old-fashioned' way - buckets are hung on the tree taps and when full, carried up to the sugar shack. The process then becomes very modern - the sap is boiled up in a large evaporator then bottled for use, or sale, in the Sugar Shack.
To better serve you the sugar shack is now open year round.
Typical Sugar Shack meals are available. For reservations call 613-291-5362.
